The Front Crossmember on your bus is filthy from years of use.
This article will help you get it out of there, to clean it up and have it rebuilt.
Above is the crossmember once it was uninstalled, painted and rebuilt. Looks great doesent it!
RE-INSTALING
STEP 1
Well the long chore of cleaning, and rebuilding the front beam (crossmember) is finally done.
But...... now you must put it back in the vehicle. This is very difficult to do by yourself.
Hopefully the bus is on jackstands, and not blocks. This is very-very unsafe to have your bus
on blocks alone. The first thing you will need is a good floor jack. You should also have 2 other people with you when you do this job. Now...... get your bolts ready, you should have
a total of twelve of these, there is six for each side. These bolts have a head of 3/4" and
you should have the appropriate ratchets and crescent wrenches handy.
Also, apply some grease on the insides of the beam, so it will slip into position easier.
STEP 2
Get the jack into a good position to roll it straight under the front of the bus. Have
your two friends pick up the beam and center it over the jack. Place a towel or some old
shop rags between the jack and the beam, this will stop it from damage and scratches in the
new paint you put on it. With the beam on the jack, slide the jack underneath the bus,
and center it to where you want it. Slowly jack up the beam with one man one man on each
side of the outer ends of the beam. Have each guy wiggle the beam until it goes on the frame rails. When you get the beam where you want, take a couple of bolts and slide them in the holes and screw them down to a certain point. One by one, tighten all twelve bolts from the beam to the framerail. Once you are done with this you may lower the jack.
STEP 3
You have basically finished the re-install. The hardest part is getting the beam to slide
back into the frame rails. This takes some muscle. Now you know the rest...... reconnect the tranny linkage, e-brake cables and brake hoses to your spindles. This task takes so much longer to uninstall than to install. Have fun and Be safe !
